Background
The Hangar was founded in 2004 on the belief that no one in our country should go hungry, and especially not children. The Hangar is actually the storehouse for our “7-for-7” food ministry, derived from Genesis 41:33-36, in which the Egyptians were advised to harvest and store food from the seven years of abundance for use in the seven years of famine so that the country would not be ruined. From this passage arose the name, “7-for-7” and what better place to store a “747” than in The Hangar.
Purpose
The Hangar is a food outreach ministry that is dedicated to feeding families in Liberty County. This program is funded through donations which are raised by New Life Family Church in Midway, Georgia. The Hangar is a non-exclusive program that provides groceries as needed for lower income families or those in need.
Logistics
NLFC gets food from America's Second Harvest in Savannah, Georgia, as well as the local Post Office Drive and food drives from within the church. Guidelines for USDA products, The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), and Georgia Nutritional Assistance Program (GNAP) are implemented in the Hangar. The GNAP program is for families with children under the age of 18. This program allows extra food for these families having proof of Georgia residency and qualification for government-funded programs such as WIC or food stamps. Hangar staff must keep records of USDA items given away weekly. Second Harvest also requires a monthly service report of how many households, adults under 65, children under 18 and Seniors 65 and older receive groceries from these programs as well as from our “pantry” every month.
Impact in Our Community
The Hangar is a source of food for families in our community who are in need of assistance. Most of these families resides in Liberty County, primarily in Midway, but some from surrounding communities.
Why focus locally?
The Hangar focuses locally to build from the bottom up. To achieve the hope that one day no one will go hungry, you must start somewhere. What better place than our own community? When a local community comes together for a common cause, such as The Hangar, it gives that community a united front. When a community works together, they can achieve greatness and fulfill their purpose in helping others.
